review Vicky Donor'

A few weeks back, if someone had told me that I would be going into raptures, over an unknown bollywood flick, called “Vicky Donor”, produced by John Abraham, starring a couple of cuties from television … I would have rudely snorted! Famous last words! 'Vicky Donor' – Waah Waah!
VD (oh God, that doesn’t sound great, does it?!) donates more than sperm; it pumps freshness, guts, creativity, humor, sensitivity, the joyful art of story-telling & more, into the stale, ghissa-pita, much flogged stereotyped canvas of hindi cinema, which ab tak, has relied on star power (a mafia of middle aged actors, who refuse to grow up & leave the stage for fresh blood!), the time tested crappy formula of syrupy romances, vulgar comedies & the mother of ‘em all, badla kinda movies! Enter Vicky Donor – a comic kahani about infertility & sperm donation, with all its twists & turns, a whacky romance of the “2 States” kind – Punjabi munda vs Bengali chori & a breezy handling of the issue of social stigma attached to sperm donation! Credit to the director, Shoojit Sircar (who is he?!) for treating it just right – neither a cheap comedy, nor a morbid tale, but a funny, sensitive & very real movie, which crackles to life with some awesome characters! Kudos to the producer, John Abraham – our former all brawn & no brain star, for backing such a venture & shukriya dude, for not acting in it! Ayushman Khurana looks like he was born to do the role – Television’s loss is Hindi cinema’s gain. This is one talented, charming, spontaneous actor - remember, you read it here first, this dude’s going places! Welcome back, Anu Kapoor, to the world of acting! Thought he was never going to be more than a fabulous singer & over-the-top anchor of ‘Antakshari’! As the earthy Punjabi doctor, on the quest for the perfect sperm, he sparkles!
But it’s the sassy, bindaas & doting “Daadi” who you long to take home – Vicky tells her that there are only two modern symbols of Delhi, ‘ek metro, aur doosri aap!’ Dolly Ahluwalia: thank God someone pulled her out of the backdrop where she has been designing costumes for award winning movies & persuaded her to play Vicky ki Maa – she kicks ass as the bhindi cutting owner of the beauty parlor, who shares a stiff drink or two, with Dadi every night – wow! Yammi Gautam is lovely, as the Bengali banker, who steals Vicky’s heart & fits right into this fabulous ensemble of actors. A tangy bhelpuri of deft direction, awesome acting, mature production, with a tadka of sensitivity & dollops of humor, donate some time for “Vicky Donor!”
