confessions of a shopaholic - & me!

Hum kissi se kum nahin …. if Isla Fisher can confess, it’s time for me to come clean too!
We Kaushiks are a complicated bunch:
Papa Kaushik is a fan of multi-tasking: when he visits the loo, he goes in armed with juicy gossip rags & philm magazines … but the official line to the public is “Oh I don’t read these. Just buy ‘em for the wife!’ Yeah, right!
Mama Kaushik has her own issues – till my princess was young, innocent & needed to be taken to the theatres by mommy dearest, I indulged in my love for girly films, all under the guise of being a good parent, who had to undergo such torture, all for the sake of her pyaari putri!
Those were the golden days of chick-flick watching – ‘bring it on’, ‘mean girls’, ‘freaky Friday’, ‘what a girl wants’ ….
Nestled in this fat lady was a teenage soul, who thrived on candy floss films!
Bonus was the admiration society showered on me … what a fabulous ‘maatashri’ I was, so clued in to what my offspring wanted! Ha! Little did they know.
Life’s cruel – my ‘lil rajkumari grew up, hung out with friends more exciting than dull ‘ole mama, watched movies with them & the cruelest cut of all, learnt to hail cabs on her own!
I had the gift of independence – did I want it??? Hell, NO!!!!
I was in rehab – had to learn to live a life without the joy of chick-flicks!
“Confessions of a shopaholic” hit the cinema halls & something in me snapped!
I didn’t want to be rehabilitated; no closure for me … the escapist in me craved happy, mad, illogical entertainment.
I’m glad I had not read the book, so no expectations there.
But Isla Fisher is a cutie pie in the Reese Witherspoon kind of way : quirky, funny, blonde & most important, very likeable!
The storyline is this young, pretty thing who well, as the title suggests, is a helpless shopaholic!
Her cravings are so real that even the store mannequins seem to beckon her and talk her into buying one more unnecessary purchase – quite cool, those scenes!
Standard stuff, girl meets guy who is her boss, they fall in love, some speed-breakers, like her addiction & white lies, which make her almost lose her loved ones, especially her loyal best friend & how she overcomes, survives & emerges a winner.
These movies have to have happy endings! I was in a theatre with kindred souls, because at the end of this light, frothy entertainer, there was loud applause and lots of glistening eyes!
My favorite scene – the impromptu, spontaneous, insane ‘fan dance’ which Isla Fisher breaks into. Truly ‘fan’tastic! That’s when my husband, who was blackmailed into coming along with me, nodded & said, ‘yeah, that madness makes u understand why she is “Borat’s” girlfriend & the mother of his child!
Thank-you ‘confessions ..’ I have now stepped out of the closet & the whole world of girly corny movies beckons invitingly!
Kyonki woman bhi kabhi girl thi!!!!
