dostana spells escapist entertainment

The odds were heavily stacked against “Dostana”.
*The martyr like husband who dislikes Karan Johar movies, came along like the sacrificial lamb!
*The horror of Kabhi Alvida Na Kehn’ was still fresh in my mind!
*This was the lead pair of “Drona” … need I say more???!
We sank back into our seats nervously & patted the big tub of popcorn, which we hoped would provide a ‘quantum of solace’ in the torturous hours ahead!
Then Shilpa Shetty ‘bounced’ in her Manish Malhotra, ‘hardly there’ creations & the man next to me discarded the popcorn for the eye candy on screen!
Not that I was complaining – John Abraham was giving Shilpa a run for her money in the ‘hardly there’ department & won hands down!
For the first time since he got hitched & lost his smile, u spotted the “Aby-Baby’ of “Bluffmaster” & “Bunty aur Babli”!
Priyanka was the surprise package for me – with a drop dead gorgeous figure, sporting cutting edge fashion, she was relaxed & real!
Escapist entertainment no doubt, but who cares?
Love this world which looks straight out of Archie comics, where work looks like a picnic, the apartment has a view for which you would willingly sell your soul & in general, life is a non-stop party, 24x7!
But the coolest part about the film for me was that despite the ‘gay’ theme, the movie had its funny moments, without going over the top.
Like when Kiron Kher does aarti for John Abraham & accepts him as her son’s partner, even though she doesn’t know whether she is blessing her ‘bahu’ or ‘daamaad’!
Or Priyanka worrying about the fact that she & her two male friends are all lusting after the same guy – Bobby Deol – who looked good, until he suddenly sported this terrible fringe on his forehead!
The “Venice story” created by Abhishek to describe his meeting with John was hilarious!
Looks like the departure from the “K” factor has worked for Karan Johar! While I wont label this a great movie, if u r looking for a break to brighten up your weekend, “Dostana” hai na!
