2012!!!

There I was in a cinema hall, packed to capacity with believers – that come 2012 & …. end of the world! KHALLAAS!!

This was an optimistic lot which believed that if they were gonna go up there & keep their dates with the Maker, may as well eat, drink & be merry during the ‘safar’!

So while giant cracks appeared on the surface of the earth, the sound effects were provided by the disgruntled man next to me ( who probably was thinking that if I have to die today, why next to this fat, middle-aged-aunty-ji?!) made crackling noises with his popcorn & nachos, loud rumbles while sipping his coke ….

I suspect a Bollywood haath in the making of this movie – a la Mahesh Bhatt, who steals from real life, voila, a black US President!! It gets progressively more bizarre, when u encounter a fake Arnold Schwarznegger …. by the time we glimpse the Dalai Lama calmly sitting in his ‘lil kutir, waiting to embrace the end of the world, you shrug helplessly – kuch bhi ho sakta hai!

Some cheap thrills for us desi-viewers - this epic kahani, has its beginnings in India - with Jimmy Mistry of “Guru” fame, speaking hindi with a phoren accent!

The crux of the film is based on the first law of Indian films – no matter what, only the villains die … the hero & his family are always enveloped by a protective bubble – they dodge craters, floods, storms, avalanches, watch the earth collapse around them, but thanx to being ‘Bollywood Bhakths’, fear not – years of rigorous training with desi flicks have left their mark …. NOTHING can ever happen to the hero & his parivaar!

Sure, you witness some awesome special effects – but we’ve seen it all in movies like ‘Independence Day’ & ‘Day After Tomorrow’, so yawn!

The movie reminded me of this exotic dish, which has all the right ingredients, but when u bite into it, something’s missing! Is it a more credible star cast? Sharper script? Believable story?!

Frankly, don’t bother trying to figure it out! Not worth it! Dunno about the earth, but sure couldn’t wait for the movie to come to an end!

But I am the ‘glass half-full’ kinda gal – so the movie wasn’t great shakes – no worries! We got our money’s worth with the trailer of James Cameron’s much awaited “Avatar” –superb, fantastic, mindblowing … pure paisa vasool!

PS: of course, even the news of the upcoming “Avatar” pales into insignificance, when you realize that Himesh Reshammiyya’s next movie, enigmatically titled “Radio” is due for release!
